Purple Hive in Townsville

Purple Hive in Townsville

In a very proud moment for the Purple Hive Project, a Purple Hive was deployed at Port of Townsville land in May 2023, in a Queensland first, supporting the Port of Townsville and Biosecurity Queensland as they take steps to bolster their Varroa mite fight.

The Port of Townsville is considered to be a high risk area for bee pests entering Australia, including the Varroa destructor, as the location is a port of entry into Australia, including the Varroa destructor, as the location is a port of entry into Australia for many overseas vessels.

The beehive will be taken care of by local hobbyist bee-keeper, Sonya.
